Oroiña: Orisha from the center of the earth

Oroina

Orisha that makes up the core of the planet earth. The cry of the volcano. Participant in volcanic eruptions and terrestrial earthquakes. Jealous and overprotective mother. Energy that gives life and death, that is Oroiña.

Who is Oroiña?

Oroiña is a Deity of the Yoruba pantheon who shares a very particular relationship with the Orisha Agayu. Some claim that he is the mother and father of that Orisha. The close relationship between both spiritualities is undeniable, especially because it is represented by the Volcano. Even due to that affinity, Agayú is attributed the dominion over the fiery lava. Let us remember that Aggayu Solá is directly related to Olorun, therefore, Oroiña is related to him in the same way.

This explains why when a volcano erupts we hear a thunderous sound. It is the voice of Oroíña, while we observe the power of the Orisha Aggayu destroying everything in its path thanks to the devouring and transforming power of the lava that makes everything it touches its own.

It is also believed that the Orisha Oroiña descends from Orisha Oko, another deity with a direct dependence on Olorun, since, thanks to solar energy, crops are developed.

Story: Oroiña raised Oggun

It happened that Olofin was worried about his son Ogun, whose mother was Oroiña. At that time Oroiña lived in the Bobogun land, where Yemaya also lived, who had many geese and ducks.

One day, Eshu was walking through the Bobogun land and observed that Ogun was playing with ducks and geese, and his behavior was a bit effeminate and a bit fearful, therefore, he caught the attention of Oroiña who was immediately annoyed and replied to Eshu that this was none of her business and that she raised her child as she pleased.

Eshu was embarrassed and annoyed by this answer and said, "Someday I will see Olofin and tell him about it." Then, he went to Orumila's house and related what had happened. He told her to make a sacrifice with: a chick, corn, brandy, honey, hutía and smoked fish; and that way he could get to Olofin. He also recommended that along the way he spread bits of yam, cocoa butter, husk, honey and sing the following suyere: "Eshu ni leyera babu."

Eshu tells Olofin how Oroiña raised Ogun

Eshu did what Orumila recommended and Olofin immediately listened to him. Upon meeting, he asked him if he had managed to see his son in Bobogun land. Eshu told him that he was with his mother Oroiña and how she was raising him. Olofin thanked Eshu for the message and gave him a hutía to release when he reached the land where his son lived, recommending that he make the following prayer: "aguete mogun yogun olofin yelero, magua oriña bobotigun omo water."

When Eshu reached Bobogun land, Oroiña heard him uttering the words that Olofin had indicated. Immediately, a very great fear seized her and Ogun who hugged her quickly, but she let go of him due to the shock, then Eshu grabbed him and took him away.

On the way Ogun did not want to continue next to Eshu and hid to sleep inside some irons. Eshu went back to Orumila's house, who told him to go find Olofin and tell him where Ogun was.

Eshu presents his father olofin to ogun

Olofin, upon hearing what happened, went out in search of him, carrying a banana. Upon meeting Ogun, who was called "Water" in those lands, Eshu told him that Olofin was his father. Then, Agua threw himself in front of Olofin who realized that his son was living in fear, for which, he handed him the machete that Eshu was carrying, dressed him with 101 pieces of iron and led him to the mountain. In that place, Olofin declared: «You will be the King of the mountain. You will never walk with anyone in the world who does not serve, one day you will save your mother and then you will do Ifá ». And he fed him the banana he was carrying.

Oggun dedicates himself to sustaining the earth to save his mother

After that Olofin withdrew, but was so upset that he sent the sea to eat the land. Eshu, seeing the tragedy that was coming, ran in search of Agua (Ogun) and told him: "You are the only one who can stop the sea from eating the earth, which is your mother." Ogun got under the ground and held it. Olofin, seeing that, told him: "You will support the earth and you will be the King of the force." Then, Olofin forgave Oroiña and fed him a banana.
